For our revitalization program, we have adopted the Main Street approach, which has been embraced and successfully implemented by 1,400 cities nationwide. In Washington State, it has been a productive strategy for cities such as Walla Walla and Port Townsend, which are enjoying an economic renaissance.

The Main Street approach provides a comprehensive downtown-revitalization program with initiatives aimed at building progressive communities. Through a carefully organized plan, it offers a greater chance for quicker results and sustained growth than many other forms of economic development.

As prescribed by the program, we have established four tightly integrated committees—Design, Economic Restructuring, Organization, and Promotion. These committees are capitalizing on area assets to create market opportunities and reinforce sustainable growth.
